Next and their stupid unsubscribe process

After receiving a horrible image heavy email from Next this morning I decided to unsubscribe from their service. As with most emails they have an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the page.

Unsubscribing does not need to be difficult, and there are three common approachs:

  1. You click on the link and a web page opens where you confirm you no longer want to subscribe by either clicking on a button or entering your email address into a field. This is the way it should be.
  2. Logging into a site and updating your communication preferences. This is the slightly annoying way.
  3. Next And Their Stupid Unsubscribe Process.

When clicking on the unsubscribe link in the email you are taken to this page where there is no mention of unsubscribing from emails. All there is is a login where you need your customer number, what customer number? I didn't know I was a customer, I didn't know I had a customer number.

The reason companies make their forms difficult to unsubcribe from is so that they can keep their mailing list as large as possible. The reality though is that it just ends up leaving a sour taste.
